60 years (and a few weeks) ago, this little girl was born . . .
And all she wanted for her birthday was to have all her children and grandchildren there to celebrate with her (and to go camping). So up we drove . . . .
Don’t the kids look happy and content in the car? (We hadn’t even backed out of the driveway when I snapped these pictures. But they did do well traveling.) It took us longer than we anticipated to get to there, because we almost ran out of gas, the kids needed longer breaks, and there was a long line at the border.
But we made it! And after Scott’s mom got packed up we headed out to the campground . . . it was about 8:30pm. Scott and I had no idea where this campground was or what remote road we would be traveling on . . . I was quite nervous driving on a windy dirt road with a steep cliff on one side. But we made it and found the only available camp site (right next to the port-a-potty).
The kids were asleep at this point, so we set up our tent using the car headlights. Try as hard as we might, we couldn’t fit our air mattress and Scott’s mom’s cots in the same tent. So we set up a second tent. By then the kids were awake. Scott’s mom wanted to have a campfire, but we were exhausted. It was 11pm!
In the morning, Scott wen to light the campfire (after he split kindling for it) only to discover that no one brought matches. Whoops!
We did enjoy walking by the river, and letting the kids play in the river with Grandma.
After we packed up camp, Scott’s mom took us over to see some other local sites. (I think this was a sweat lodge, but I don’t remember for certain.)
We had to hike up a steep hill to get to it. But it was really cool to see. (The kids liked hearing their echoes inside it.)
To be continued . . . .
