Scott and I had been feeling very guilty that we have never taken Lily down to Arizona to meet his grandmother. (Lily has already met all of her other grandparents.) We decided to risk our sanity and drive down to Arizona for Scott’s uncle’s funeral and let Lily meet her great-grandma.
But how do you survive 4-1/2 days in the car with not only your own 2 year old, but an additional 7 adults and 4 children? (We caravanned/carpooled with Scott’s family.) The answer is lots and lots and lots of bribery and a few stops to get the wiggles out. I took
my mom’s advice and stocked up on a lot of snacks for the car trip, and then bought Lily a bunch of little presents from the local thrift and dollar stores. Every time we got back in the car (which is normally when Lily throws a fit) I would give her a present. She loved unwrapping all of her little presents.
Here we are with Scott’s grandma. She’s such a sweetheart! Lily was so excited to finally meet her “Gwamma Sanners”
The house we rented had a swimming pool and pool table. Lily was scared of the pool at first, but after we coaxed her in, we couldn’t get her out. She even wanted to go off the diving board like her parents, but I was a mean Mom and wouldn’t let her.
On the way home, I had to stop and visit the local “Friendly Indians” and buy Lily a small memento from our trip. Lily chose a hand carved turtle necklace.
We were all happy to be home again, and are still recovering from the quick trip.

I wish I would've known you were in AZ! What part were you in?
Wow, you have courage doing a 4.5 day road trip. Glad to hear things went well and I really like your idea of wrapping little gifts. I will keep that in mind to bribe my kid when needed. Sorry to hear about the purpose for your trip though!
I am glad you were able to make the trip and that everything went so well. I still have to laugh about the friendly Indians!
I'm glad you survived. Looks like fun though!
what's the deal with the "friendly indians" why is that in quotes? Is Scott's family "unfriendly indians"? From your pictures your trip looks like a lot of fun... but I'm sure the parts in the car were rather difficult.
Yes, Scott's family is full of "Friendly Indians." When Scott & I went down to AZ 3 years ago, there were some very creative advertisements for the local street vendors that made me laugh. As you drove to the Grand Canyon, you saw a sign "Friendly Indians ahead." Then another sign "Turn Right." After you passed them "Turn Back. Friendly Indians Behind You!" And that is why I call them "Friendly Indians."
What a great trip! I'm glad you could be together with family. I wish it weren't such a sad occasion. It looks like Lily had a great time bonding with her "friendly Indian" extended family! AND I love her haircut! Super cute!
