Did Lily just say that?

According to Scott, Lily said her first word. I am a little skeptical, even though I was present for the event in question.

We were walking around Wal-Mart, killing time while we waited for Scott's mom to meet up with us in Omak. I had Lily in the Bjorn. She saw Scott walking up to her, she looked right at him and said, "Dada!" I think she's just babbling, but Scott swears she said her first word!

What does everyone think? Should it count?

(SCOTT):
Candice's lack of description above might sway the voting. She failed to mention that when I was coming toward Lily she got really excited, smiled from ear to ear, looked directly at me with wide eyes, and exclaimed emphatically "Dada!"

I must say, I think that should count. I don't see how she could have meant it any other way.

I say it definitely counts. As you watch babies' language abilities develop, you will notice more and more that the lines are grey.
PS I'm glad you've return to the blog after a hiatus!

I think she was just babbling. But then again, I wasn't there. Dada will probably be her first word.. but not yet.

I say it counts! She may have been saying the only sounds she is good at. But she was delighted to see him and was calling out to him.

I'd count it!

I'd count it. She appears to have connected the sound she was making with the stimulus. And it'll make "Dada" feel good. :)

Sorry you guys, but all the linguistic classes I've ever taken say it doesn't count. According to the textbook, when babies are first learning how to talk they begin with simple phonemes (simple sound units of speech that carry no meaning- like the way a letter sounds) and then progressing into morphemes (the smallest unit in a language that actually carries semantic meaning). Lily is just practicing noises so that she can learn to make sense. The first sounds a baby make are typically "dada" and "mama" because of the ease in which you can make those sounds. It's still AMAZING that she's making so much progress toward talking, but sorry Scott, Lily is just experimenting with different sounds. (This was probably a waaay longer explanation than what you were looking for! Sorry!)
